Sugarcane molasses with a small amount of local red rice is fermented in wooden vats and double distilled on the island of Java, Indonesia using old fashioned pot stills. It is then aged for a short period on the island before being shipped to the Netherlands where is undergoes a second period of...

...aging in large casks for up to eight years. Various ages of arrack are then blended and bottled.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 02/05/2016

Appearance:

(sample batch 001, bottle No. 001) Clear but not bright, golden amber.

Aroma:

Fruity esters – apple, overripe pear, overripe banana – cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, new leather, old oak, clove and anise.

Taste:

Dry spicy oak partially balanced by the merest hint of sweetness. Spicy, fruity esters explode on the palate, somewhat smoothed by linseed oil.

Aftertaste:

Linseed oil rubbed leather, dry oak and lingering clove, nutmeg and cinnamon spice with fruity esters.

Overall:

Forget refinement, bring on the flavour explosion. Proper Batavia Arrack is powerful stuff and this characterful example has assertive fruit esters and spice.
