Founded in 2013 by fellow Australians, distiller Philip Moore and designer/coffee-nerd Tom Baker. Mr Black is made with Australian wheat neutral spirit and a blend of Speciality Grade 100% arabica coffee beans sourced from Colombia, Kenya, and Papua New Guinea at its distillery just north of Sydney.
No additional flavours, preservatives, caramels or vanillas are added. To quote the producers, "When we say nothing artificial we mean it: There's nothing added to Mr Black apart from coffee, water, alcohol, sugar and time."
Specialty Grade Coffee has become an overused and abused term but the folk at Mr Blacks use Speciality Grade Coffee which has "received more than 80 points from 100 on cupping scale (judged on a cupping table by special committee of Q graders). Mr Black uses coffee with cupping scores higher than 85 points and with a focus on direct trade."
During 2020 the alc./vol. of Mr Black was reduced from the original 25% to 23% alc./vol.

(sample bottle N0. 218 of 300) Hazy, deep umber brown. (Give the bottle a shake prior to opening.)
Pungent espresso coffee and freshly roasted coffee beans with dark chocolate and white pepper.
Assertive dry, slightly bitter espresso and roasted coffee beans with faint vanilla and dark bitter chocolate.
Very faint vanilla and zesty orange emerge on the intense coffee finish.
Drier than your average coffee liqueur with punchy espresso notes and very delicate flavours, particularly the orange notes that emerge in the finish.
