Made in Australia's Yarra Valley, the folk at Four Pillars distillery take Shiraz grapes from neighbouring vineyards and steep these in their Four Pillars Rare Dry Australian Gin to produce this Bloody Shiraz.
To quite the distillers, "each year we steep Yarra Valley Shiraz grapes in gin, de-stemming the fruit but keeping them mainly as whole berries. The tanks are kept cold and stirred daily. After eight weeks we press the fruit before blending with more Rare Dry Gin." "The gin is unfiltered, so it will develop secondary fruit characters beyond two years and is best consumed within two years of vintage."
(sample bottle vintage 2018) Clear, deep crimson red.
Piney juniper, blackcurrant, black tea and cracked black pepper.
Sweet red berries and blueberry jam, dry piny juniper and tea-like tannins, black pepper spice and angelica root nutty woodiness. Hints of menthol cough sweet.
Warming berry and spiced juniper finish.
The Australian answer to sloe gin – this Shiraz grape steeped gin is slightly sweet with rich jammy berry flavours, but these are balanced by pine needle freshness, tannins and enlivening black pepper spice.
