A coffee liqueur based on the Illy blend of 100% Arabica coffee.
Previously named ‘Illy Espresso liqueur’ and packaged in an oval helter-skelter necked bottle designed by the famous Italian architect, Spiro Radomirovic. The original Illy liqueur was developed and produced at the Bepi Tosolini Distillerie, Udine, close to Illy’s plant in northern Italy. Sometime during 2008-09 production was moved to D.C.M. SpA (Stab. Di Canale), who also produce Frangelico and Aperol and the packaging changed to a tall round bottle with a screw-cap silver closure. (The original had a cork stopper).
The original Illy Espresso liqueur was based on the Illy coffee 100% Arabica blend with each bottle made using 129 grams of coffee beans extracted by a warm water infusion process developed in collaboration with Illycaffè SpA. This process mimicked the brewing of espresso coffee to best extract the flavours. Knowing the perfectionists at Illy, I doubt this has changed. This production process is unusual for the production of a coffee liqueur as alcohol is added later instead of being used to extract the coffee’s flavour through maceration or distillation.
Sampled on 03/01/2011
Dark roasted coffee, oily treacle nose.
Hints of dark chocolate leads to a medium dry balanced palate with oily mouth feel and rich dark coffee with a hint of dark bitter chocolate and vanilla.
