This limited-edition release is touted as "a world-first for Irish whiskey; a single pot still Irish whiskey aged in bourbon barrels and finished in virgin Hungarian oak." The Hungarian Quercus Petraea oak was felled in the Carpathian Mountains where it grew in rich volcanic soils.
Sampled on 16/03/2020
Clear, bright coppery amber.
Pencil shavings, hot sawn oak, maple syrup, chamois leather and cigar ash.
Dry stewed tea tannins, spicy young wood and liquorice with faint banana.
Dry and spicy toasted oak with faint milk chocolate.
Eleven months in new Hungarian oak has imparted generous (perhaps overly so) dry wood tannins but these are mellowed a little by underlying richness.
