Founded in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto, Contratto's Americano Rosso is based on Cortese white wine, alcohol, water, sugar, and extracts from 25 herbs, spices, roots, and seeds (of which 14 are secret). It is coloured with caramel extracts.
Botanicals include ginger, mint leaves, hibiscus flower, hawthorn flower, nettle leaves, angelica leaves, bitter and sweet orange peel, rhubarb, sage, and liquorice.

Appearance:
Clear, burnished copper-amber.
Aroma:
Quinine with deep herbal notes, zesty citrus and faint floral scents.
Taste:
On the bitter side of bittersweet with mouth-puckering quinine, orange zest, sage and floral notes.
Aftertaste:
Long bittersweet quinine finish with zesty citrus and lingering floral notes.
Overall:
Assertive quinine bitterness with zesty citrus and floral notes.
