D. H. Krahn Gin is contract distilled by Essential Spirits in Silicon Valley, California for a New York based company established by a couple of former Cornell classmates, Dave Hughes and Scott Krahn, who have pursue what started as a class project after graduation.
Six botanicals are used to flavour D.H. Krahn: Italian juniper berries, Moroccan coriander seeds, Floridian oranges, Californian lemon and grapefruit and Thai Ginger. The steam jacket heated copper alembic (pot) still used is made by French still manufacture, Jean-Louis Stupfler and this is charged with corn neutral spirit. The botanicals, which are held in bags, steep in the spirit for 48 hours. After this period the bags are raised above the level of the spirit so that the botanicals are not in direct contact with the spirit during distillation.
Then the gin is pumped into 55 gallon drums where it is left to rest for three months before bottling. We are assured by the producers than no sugar or other sweetening or smoothing additives are used.
