Straffe Hendrik was first brewed in 1981 after the city's mayor asked Henri Maes to create a strong blond beer for the inauguration of the statue of Sint-Arnoldus, the patron saint of beer-brewers. It is named Straffe Hendrik, (Strong Hendrik) due to its powerful flavour and high alcohol strength.

The last surviving Brugesibrewed triple-style ale.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 27/03/2012

Appearance:

Very slight haze, coppery amber with white head which quickly disappears.

Aroma:

Pungent clove, herbal, biscuity nose with black pepper, toffee and citrus.

Taste:

Full-bodied herbal, malty palate with tongue tingling black pepper bite, coriander and stewed pear. High alcohol strength is masked by subtle honey sweetness and powerful botanicals.

Aftertaste:

Lingering maltyness and cracked black pepper.
