Launched in January 2008, this beer is named after Jesús Malverde, a Robin Hood-style figure considered the ‘patron saint’ of Mexican drug traffickers so understandably has caused considerable controversy in its native Mexico where the government is battling to defeat powerful drug gangs.

Historians question whether Jesús Malverde ever existed but legend has it the he was born in the late 1800s and lived a life of crime in the western Mexico state of Sinaloa, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor during the reign of Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz. The legend ends with his execution by Sinaloa’s State Governor in 1909.

Malverde translates literally as ‘green evil’, said by some to evoke marijuana and fittingly this bottle has a green label featuring hops plant and the mustachioed Malverde. The side of the label describes the beer as a tribute to Jesús Malverde and finishes with the slogan, “Un héroe, una leyenda, una cerveza” which literally translates as ‘A hero, a legend, a beer.’

The beer itself is a malty, European-style pilsner. Some of the barley is imported from Wisconsin.
