Classified an amaro, Nardini Tagliatella is based on grappa, neutral spirit and cherry distillate with bitter orange, herbs and spices. Indeed, the secret recipe comprises 15 of Nardini's other products but the prevalent taste is cherry, from the cherry distillate, with complex herbs and spices.

The patched chequered costume of the harlequin on Tagliatella's label evokes its many ingredients drawn from 15 of Nardini's other products. As does its name (pronounced 'Tal-ya-tell-la') which comes from the Italian word 'tagliare' meaning 'cut', as in tagliatelle pasta, so named because the pasta is cut into long strips.

The story of this complex bittersweet liqueur dates back to a period of extreme poverty in post-war Italy when the impoverished locals didn't have the money to buy their usual grappa or liqueur from Nardini's famous grapperia. In those days the products in the grapperia where dispensed from large copper flagons perched over the bar rather than bottles. Each container had a tapped spout and since the taps dripped, there was a small pan hanging under each tap to collect drips and spillage. Throughout the day, the contents of the pans were emptied into a barrel and its contents offered to those people who couldn't afford grappa. The drink became known as 'tagliatella', due to its comprising a cut of everything and it became so popular that Nardini created this liqueur.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 11/02/2014

Appearance:

Clear, coppery amber with bronze glints.

Aroma:

Pungent mandarin orange zest, maraschino cherry, almond and fragrant peach with cinnamon spice.

Taste:

Underlying pine and barky bitterness with bitter orange zest and dry herbal notes is lifted with sweet cherry, dark muscovado sugar, honey and floral notes. Very complex.

Aftertaste:

Light bitterness and lingering sweet cinnamon spice. This bittersweet digestive liqueur has flavour cues reminiscent of spiced Southern Comfort.
