The Massa family's traditional recipe made using fruits grown on the family lemon grove dates back to 1890. In 1991, brothers Sergio and Stefano Massa founded the Villa Massa company to make and market their family's liqueur to a wider audience.

Villa Massa is made with Sorrentine lemons, the only variety recognised by the term "Indicazione Geografica Protetta" (Protected Geographical Location) in Piano di Sorrento in the heart of the Sorrentine peninsula.

Villa Massa boasts its own lemon groves, Le Grottelle, which are open to the public and are still managed by the Massa family.

In April 2016, New packaging was launched to coincide with the brand's 25th anniversary. The new bottles include Villa Massa etched into the frosted glass with 'Ricetta Familiare' on the cap paying homage to the family's recipe.
