Created to replace the exhausted previous 'Secession' which was launched in 1990, this 100% Grand Champagne was launched in 2004 to mark the bicentenary of Napoléon being crowned Emperor of France back on 2nd December 1804.
The blend includes cognacs thought to date between 1910 and 1945. These were discovered when Courvoisier's then master distiller Jean-Marc Olivier was visiting the cellars of a bouilleur de cru in the centre of Grand Champagne. The old man of the house had died and his daughter wanted to sell the stock which included some demijohns which held a cognac her father had always described as being 'special'. They were. The demijohns contained enough for just 595 bottles of Succession to be produced.
The 'cognacaise' bottle comes housed with four crystal glasses in handcrafted, scaled-down replica of Napoléon's Chest of Secrets, the original of which is housed in Courvoisier's museum.
Sampled before 1st May 2011
Clear, golden mahogany.
Complex nose of old sherry wine, cedar wood, cigar leaves, crème brulee, espresso coffee, liquorice and honey.
Powerful palate is equally complex, starting with cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg spiced mature Christmas cake soaked in old sherry and quickly turning dry with more spice and notes of coffee beans, cigar smoke and oak.
The huge, dry finish is reminiscent of fruit cake.
