Mark Holdsworth launched his Half Hitch Gin in September 2014 after a career working for large drinks conglomerates and discovering Camden’s historical importance with the gin industry. Mark blends his gin in the vaults of one of the old gin warehouses alongside Camden Lock.
Mark uses single estate Malawian black tea, Calabrian Bergamot, English wood, pepper and hay to produce his own tinctures and also uses a Rotavap to produce ingredients which he blends with a distilled gin base made by Alcohols Ltd at Langley Distillery.
Half Hitch Gin is named after the rope knot used to moor barges along the Lock - ‘a round turn and two half hitches’.
Sampled on 28/09/2014
Faint haze, very pale straw yellow.
Fresh zesty lemon oils, pine resin, overripe banana, loose leaf black tea and cracked black pepper.
Initially slightly sweet before quickly drying with piney juniper, lemon zest, black tea and powerful peppery spice. Orange zestiness freshens and lifts the palate.
Lingering pine, black pepper and black tea tannins with faint eucalyptus and orange zest. Overall: Lacks finesse but I like the invigorating flavouring and this gin’s artisanal rawness.
