I've been able to find out very little about this rum, which is distilled and bottled on the island of Mauritius.
According to Jeffrey Zarnow, the American brand owner: "Basically, we are pretty tight-lipped about our distillation methods. Here is what I can tell you: Starr is made from world-class Mauritian sugarcane. Like top-shelf vodkas, we filter out most of the impurities of the alcohol so it's as smooth if not smoother than any vodka. However, unlike the vodkas, we do not remove the wonderful flavour of the rum. The rum is a blend of aged rums that are aged up to six years."
Well, dear readers, we believe the reason that Jeffrey is so "tight-lipped" is because his rum is basically Green Island rum made by International Distillers which he has had bottled in a tall, triangular bottle to command a considerable premium to what Green Island sells at outside the USA. Hats off to you Jeffrey. That being the case, we surmise that Starr African Rum is distilled from fermented molasses using a four-column process and is a blend of rums aged 3-5 five years, charcoal filtered prior to bottling to remove the colour imparted by ageing and to purify the rum.
