Originally named 'Black Grouse' after the rare Black Grouse, a rare cousin to the better known Red Grouse. Only around 5,000 male Black Grouse birds survive in Britain and 50 pence from each bottle of whisky sold is donated to the RSPB charity towards conservation work.
What was originally 'The Black Grouse Scotch whisky' was renamed 'The Famous Grouse Smoky Black' in September 2015 to "ensure a consistent look and feel across the brand’s core portfolio", according The Edrington Group, the brand's owners. The change also saw the introduction of a new tinted glass bottle "to convey the smokiness of the whisky it contains."
