In early August 1291, representatives of Switzerland’s different cantons met in a field above Lake Lucerne and joined forces to work against the Austrian occupiers of their country.
Today, communities across Switzerland remember this, the starting point of Swiss independence, as they celebrate their national day with bonfires and barbecues. Fireworks illuminate the Alps, light shows flicker on Rhine waterfalls, and small children process with lanterns through mountain villages. Switzerland will always mean chocolate to us, so we are celebrating with a Chocolarita - a Margarita enriched with both coffee and chocolate.
