They have a day for everything in the States and today is National Whiskey Sour Day in America, a wonderful excuse to revisit this classic cocktail and some of its better incarnations.


A classic cocktail that's never been fashionable, and so has never become unfashionable either, the Whiskey Sour is a truly great all-year drink, with body enough for winter, and sour enough for summer.

Here is a countdown of the best Whiskey Sours:

14. Cherry Mash Sour

The rich flavour of Tennessee whiskey is soured with lemon and sweetened with cherry liqueur. Created by Dale DeGroff when he was Beverage Manager at the Rainbow Room Promenade Bar, New York City.

Tennessee whiskey, cherry brandy liqueur, lemon juice and sugar syrup.

Created by Dre Masso at Lonsdale 2006, Notting Hill. It's an Irish whiskey sour sweetened with runny honey and herbal Bénédictine with Peychaud's adding aromatics.

7. Continental Sour

A Whiskey Sour made 'continental' by the addition of a splash of port; discovered in May 2010 at Stagger Lee, Berlin.

6. French Whiskey Sour

Pastis adds a pleasing hint of anise and liquorice to the classic Whisky Sour. This drink was inspired by Tony Conigliaro's Liquorice Whisky Sour (below).

Scotch whisky blended, pastis, lemon juice, sugar syrup, Angostura Aromatic Bitters and egg white.

5. Liquorice Whiskey Sour

This twist was created in 2006 by Tony Conigliaro and the additional of liquorice dramatically changes the classic Sour, working harmoniously with the Scotch. We've tried with bourbon and the result is not nearly so pleasing.

Scotch whisky blended, liquorice syrup, lemon juice, Angostura Aromatic Bitters and egg white.

4. Weissen Sour

A classic pimped with marmalade and wheat beer, naturally complementing the wheaty bourbon and adding a sweeter citrus note. Adapted from a recipe created in 2010 by Kevin Diedrich at the Burritt Room, San Francisco.

2. Classic Whiskey Sour

This recipe follows the classic sour proportions (3:4:8); three quarter parts sour (lemon juice), one part sweet (sugar syrup), and two parts strong (whiskey).

1. Difford's Whiskey Sour

A classic Whiskey Sour that has an extra 10ml of lemon juice and half the sugar. For those, like us, with a slightly sour palate, thus making it a 4:2:8 sour formula.
