Born in Florence, Italy, on 9 March 1454, Amerigo Vespucci would go on to give his name to not one but two continents – the Americas.
A genius navigator, Amerigo sailed from Europe to South America at least twice, and his letters became bestselling travel literature. Columbus died believing the Americas were in Asia, and Amerigo was the first to recognise that the continents were new to Europeans.
Let's toast this citizen of the world, an Italian national who sailed the globe for the Spanish and Portuguese, with an American Beauty for the beautiful land he discovered.
