Review:

Spirit-forward and bittersweet. Sometimes that's what life calls for!

If you find Ryan's recipe, which originally calls for a high-strength rye, a tad on the spirituous/bitter side then try serving on-the-rocks to add some dilution, or try my split-whiskey base rendition with saline solution replacing orange bitters:
37.5 Rye whiskey (bottled in bond)
22.5 Bourbon
15 Red bitter liqueur
7.5 White crème de cacao
3 drops Saline solution

The campari to rye ratio is spot on for me but needed a little extra chocolate flavor. A dash of chocolate bitters helped, might try it again with a touch more creme de cacao.

Rittenhouse Rye and Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao make for a stellar combo in this.

I tried it ‘up’ and found the Campari/Orange Bitters a bit overwhelming. For me, ‘on the rocks’ was preferable.

So simple but effective you have to wonder why it's not been done before. Potential classic
