Review

This deep lurid reddy-brown cocktail won't be to everybody's taste but that's only to be expected with one-and-a-half shots of bitters. However, if you like cough candy then perhaps this cocktail is for you.

Not subtle.
For me, the Angostura Bitters is quite overpowering, and the bitter aftertaste quite unpleasant. Then a strong “afterbreath” of cloves.
Feels very much like a work in progress.

I really liked the drink. I tried it both with 1.5 oz of angostura and 1 oz of angostura. I found 1 oz worked better for me; 1.5 oz prevented me from tasting the other ingredients.

Subbing out the rye whiskey for a rum is a fun twist as well (and more Trinidadian-aligned?). I've also subbed it with tequila, mezcal, and smoky Islay scotch. Fun cocktail. I love it.

This is currently my favorite cocktail. Try subbing the Angostura bitters for Angostura Amaro. It smooths it out a bit.

I read it several times to make sure the ingredients weren't inverted :D

Just received my first bottle of Bitter Truth Bogart's Bitters... Couldn't think of a better drink to try it in... As good if not better... My orgeat is Giffard, my rye Sazerac... Cheers! (24 Jun 2023, 2:33p)

I'm just going to copy what Alex J said: this shouldn't work. But it does. Just wave after wave of spices. Not at all like what I expected from standing there emptying quarter of a bottle of bitters into a jigger.

Made another one with my newly restocked bitters: yes, it's like drinking liquified cloves and rust. Yes, it's delicious. Yes, you have to try this.

It really does look like a glass of rust. lol

If you like this (and I love it!) -- try the Port of Spain (also on this website.) I love it as much as a Trinidad Sour, but it's cheaper to make (uses less Angostura) yet still highly bitters-forward. Personally, I think it is more balanced, especially when using a smokey Mescal. You can even sub Scotch, as a commenter points out. IMO the key to both TS and PoS is the Orgeat. Its almond notes marry the astringent cloves and smokey liquor wonderfully-- and a healthy dose of citrus balances it all perfectly. Magic!

A spectacular drink. I'm not usually a fan of something so clove forward but this is lovely.

This shouldn't work. But it does. I may no longer go years between my Angostura bottles!

(P.S. typo in the instructions: "fine stain")

Thanks, Alex. Stray 'r' is now inserted. I make far too many typos.

I'm not sure "fine stain" is a typo at all. Make sure you brush your teeth after drinking this!
