Serve in an Old-fashioned glass

Ingredients:
1 oz Bourbon whiskey
1 oz Rémy Martin V.S.O.P. cognac
1 oz Amaro (e.g. Averna)
2 dash Cherry bitters
× 1 1 serving

How to make:

  1. Select and pre-chill an Old-fashioned glass.
  2. Prepare garnish of lemon zest twist.
  3. STIR all ingredients with ice.
  4. STRAIN into ice-filled glass (preferably over a large cube or chunk of block ice).
  5. EXPRESS lemon zest twist over the cocktail and use as garnish.

History:

Adapted from a 2020 recipe (originally served straight-up) by Jason E. Clapham, Oxford, England who told us, "The Monteleone, a Vieux Carré riff named after the Sicilian founder of the hotel where the Vieux Carré was born, in New Orleans – I am guessing he was partial to Averna like most Sicilians I have met."

Didn’t have cherry bitters either, so substituted as per John Hinojos’ suggestion - thanks. Lovely, boozy late-night sipper (much darker than photo though).

Did not have any cherry bitters so I substituted a dash of Peychaud bitters and a dash of Luxardo Marchino Liqueur. This was great. Smooth and a perfect evening sipper.
