Brewed with Pale Ale malt and First Gold hops, Broadside was first brewed as a bottled beer in 1972 with the cask version, which is brewed using a different recipe, appearing later.

The bottle and pump clip portray battleships under sail with cannons blasting, an image commemorating the Battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch in 1672 off the Southwold coast. The Dutch surprised the joint Anglo-French but the vicious battle ended inconclusively.
