Named after and based on Koskenkorva Viina Vodka, Finland's best-selling vodka, this black liquorice-flavoured liqueur, which is nicknamed 'Salmari', enjoyed something of a cult following in its native market during the 1990s. It is flavoured with Tyrkisk Peber brand salty liquorice made by Perelly.
Prior to the launch of pre-mixed Salmiakki, it was common for bars in Finland to infuse vodka with Tyrkisk Peber liquorice themselves. The drink became so popular amongst younger drinkers that the government-owned retail drinks monopoly launched Salmiakki.
Finish urban legend has it that the mix of Tyrkisk Peber and vodka was invented by singer Jari Sillanpää when he worked as a bartender in the late 1980s.
Another Finnish urban legend resulted in the drink being withdrawn from sale after tabloid newspapers reported a mythical teenager had suffered a heart attack after drinking Salmiakki. The resulting public backlash with claims that the strong liquorice flavour masked the alcohol's taste led the state-owned alcohol retailer to remove Salmiakki from its shelves. However, the Finish hate waste and are very environmentally friendly, so the stock was stashed away rather than being destroyed and five years later when the furore had died down, Salmiakki was quietly returned to the shelves.
In a country where alcohol duty is so high, part of the original appeal of Salmiakki was that although 38% alc./vol. it was taxed as a liqueur instead of spirit which made it one of cheapest alcoholic drinks available in terms of alcohol content verses cost. After Salmiakki returned its strength was lowered to 32% and its price advantage disappeared.

Pungent liquorice and star anise with icing sugar and freshly ground wholemeal flour.
Salty and sweet, rich liquorice and faint star anise. Salt and spirit black pepper spice adds balance and prevents this liqueur from being overly sweet.
