Damiana is a herb that thrives in the hot, humid climate in Baja California, Mexico and several producers infuse dried leaves and stems from the plant in alcohol to use the infusion as a base to make damiana liqueur.
Leaves from the damiana plant are used in Mexico as a traditional remedy for numerous ailments from asthma to depression, and many Mexicans believe damiana liqueur has aphrodisiac qualities, leading to being a popular gift to newlywed brides to encourage fertility.
