Vesper Dry Martini

Creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming worked in British naval intelligence during World War II, and his wartime experience of running a crack unit of specialised intelligence commandoes contributed hugely to his James Bond novels.

Both during the war and after it, as a newspaper foreign editor, he drank gin pretty much by the gallon. He published his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1953, having written it at his Jamaican estate, Goldeneye, where he spent every winter and wrote the Bond novels.

While we have mixed feelings about the line "shaken, not stirred", we are huge fans of the Vesper, the vodka-gin martini which Bond created and named for the double agent Vesper Lynd. In Bond's words he called it after her "because once you have tasted it, you won't drink anything else".
