“You can no more keep a martini in the refrigerator than you can keep a kiss there. The proper union of gin and vermouth is a great and sudden glory; it is one of the happiest marriages on earth and one of the shortest-lived.”

Bernard Devoto's Death

"You can no more keep a Martini in the refrigerator than you can keep a kiss there. The proper union of gin and vermouth is a great and sudden glory; it is one of the happiest marriages on earth and one of the shortest-lived."

Academic, journalist, novelist, and bard of (some) American cocktails, Bernard DeVoto died on this day in 1955, leaving behind him one of the most cantankerous yet wonderfully written tributes to the cocktail ever: The Hour: A Cocktail Manifesto.

Whether or not you agree with some of his sterner prescriptions - he counts even the Manhattan as an abomination - the man's praise for the Martini wins our vote. We will be toasting Mr. DeVoto with a Dry Martini - as dry as we can possibly get it.

Despite his abuse of the Manhattan you may also want to toast with what's probably its ancestor, the Martinez, in our favourite variation, with Dutch jenever.
