It's the anniversary of The Rolling Stones' first gig

Jumpin' Jack Flash

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart and Dick Taylor, billed as The Rollin' Stones, played their first gig on this day in 1962, at the Marquee Club on London's Oxford Street. Over the five decades since they have performed more than 2000 concerts around the world.

The genesis of the Rolling Stones dates back to infant school, where the young Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were friends. Hooking up again as teenagers, they formed a band. Though death, marriage and egos have changed the line-up over the years, the gist and the sound remain the same. From Paint it Black to Mother's Little Helper, and from Satisfaction to Sympathy for the Devil, the Stones have produced some of the most memorable tracks of classic rock - including Jumpin' Jack Flash, for which today's cocktail is named.

It's Louis B. Mayer's birthday

Louis B. Mayer, the man who founded MGM, created the Hollywood star system and was, for many years, America's best-paid man was born this day in 1884.

And, in what we're sure was an unusual personality trait for someone who rose from dirt poverty to spend two decades as the most powerful man in Hollywood, Mayer could be a bit of a monster - throwing rages where he'd actually roll on the floor and foam at the mouth, or literally fainting in horror.

We are toasting his legacy - of big, flashy pictures, and stars who were stars rather than actors - with a Greta Garbo, named for one of his stars, an actress it's said he unwillingly hired.
