The origin of Añejos de Altura SA (formally Licorera Zacapaneca SA), the company which produces Ron Zacapa, dates from 1940 when three independent distillers from the city of Zacapa, Guatemala banded together and formed a company in a response to newly introduced government legislation which allocated the quantity each rum producer could bottle. During the 1950s they invested in new technology and in 1963 absorbed a fourth distiller.
