Chinaski's is named after the autobiographical character from the stories and poems of German author Charles Bukowski, the patron saint of barflies.
Framed book jackets on the walls give a clue to the uninitiated.
Beyond the clever name you'll find a gastro bar with a look and feel reminiscent of venues in New York's Greenwich Village - a grand room with towering olive/grey walls topped by grand cornices and high ceilings. The rawness of the exposed stonework rear wall acts as a backdrop the impressive mirrored bar.
Ten draught brews include local brews such as Belhaven while the value-led wine list offers a dozen wines by the glass, and there are an impressive 76 bourbons and American whiskies. The food menu includes comfort dishes such as pizzas, pastas, pie and burgers.
The wines, beers and indeed the food offered appeal to local palates and pockets and are satisfactory rather than outstanding. However, we love this snug homely little bar and while it may not be a noted cocktail stop we recommend you pop in for a bourbon or two. With the M8 out front, smokers appreciate the covered and heated back veranda and small yard.
