Jeff 'Beachbum' Berry is perhaps the best-known man in the world of Tiki so when he and his wife Annene moved to New Orleans and then announced they were to open this Tiki bar in the Bienville House Hotel, it was much anticipated. Latitude lives up to expectations with brilliantly executed and presented rum and fruit-led cocktails.

The interior is mid-century modern with Tiki embellishments, rather than being out-and-out tacky-tiki. A chunky oak bar counter is backed by a Tiki map of the world while opposite a lauhala matting wall separates the bar proper from the more loungy space beyond.

Be sure to try the Espresso Bongo (Jamaican gold rum, pineapple, coffee syrup, passion fruit, orange and lime juice) cleverly garnished with a pineapple leaf fringe (the collaborative invention of Aaron Doherty, Brad Smith and Steven Yamada). We also recommend the Navy Grog (Jamaican and Demerara rums, allspice, lime and grapefruit) which the menu handily informs was Frank Sinatra's favourite Tiki drink. The signature Latitude 29 (aged Demerara rum, passion fruit puree, house Madagascar vanilla bean syrup, orange, pineapple and lemon juices) comes in a banana leaf wrapped Collins glass and is delicious, if a little sweeter.
