Review

A small barber shop in a covered shopping arcade is the unlikely and well disguised entrance to one of Leeds’, and indeed the UK’s best bars. The dark suited burley doorman is the most unlikely looking hairdresser so something of a giveaway as to the bar’s location.

The hidden staircase at the back of the shop leads down to a surprisingly spacious basement lounge with a long bar and red leather booth seating edging a herringbone wooden floor. As befits the speakeasy theme, The Domino Club has live bands from 9ish every night and when we visited, Cleve ‘Chunky Butt Funky’ Freckleton, AKA The Reverend, was belting out covers in his distinctive gospel style from the stage at the end of the room. The live music coupled with the murmur and clatter of guests gives The Domino a great atmosphere.

The clear and easy to read menu presents just three to four cocktails per page with a good selected of big name classics and classically styled signature cocktails. It also features the “break even liquid” - expensive and rare bottles sold at cost price. A new bottle appears on the menu with accompany tasting notes at the beginning of each week. For example, a Swedish single malt whisky which should sell for some £15 per measure was on offer for a mere £3.70. It’s one per customer until they sell out.
