Review

Right at the entrance to Clifton Down train station sits HMSS. You enter through a traditional and iconic British red phone box into an equally British themed bar. It’s a real family bar – like you’re stepping into somebody’s home.

The small team are really proud of HMSS and rightly so. It’s very well-run and the bar is immaculate. A carefully selected playlist sets the tone. There’s limited bar seating, high tables and a large cornered sofa to accommodate bigger groups.

The pocket-size British-themed menu which is small enough to steal, like a souvenir, is an ice-breaker in itself. It has longevity and guests are sure to return to try the whole menu. The bartenders here explore their creativity. Drinks are out of the box and bold. Serving innovative recipes suitable for any season, the team are also more than adept to make classics as well.

Although sophisticated, this bar cleverly radiates a sort of cool and fun appeal. Staff invite warm conversation and they’re proficient at both cocktails and service. Gone are the days of just peanuts at the bar, here coupled with monkey nut snacks is a game of Jenga.

This is what drinking cocktails is all about. It’s a warm and cosy hangout - British through and through.

Insider tip: Push the coats and say hello to Herman.
