Review

This speakeasy-style bar lies behind a discreet black door. Look for number 16 and ring the bell (not number 19 as sometimes appears in print, seemingly to further hide the bar's location).

Inside The Union is classic speakeasy - dim lighting, pressed tin ceiling, bare brick walls and bartenders in white shirts and bow ties. You'll think you have done well to find the entrance and gained entry to this super-secret and exclusive bar but the next challenge is to find and be welcomed into The Bureau, the venue's inner sanctum. For that you'll need to head up the narrow staircase, knock on the unmarked door at the top, and if you're lucky it will be opened and you'll be let in. Once inside you'll find three small, dimly lit rooms furnished with utilitarian plastic chairs.

Cocktails upstairs and down tend towards the classical in style and are well made. Downstairs has limited seating and at weekends can get very busy, but has a great atmosphere, while upstairs is more reserved with table service.
