There has been a pub on this site since 1547 and the Cricketers lays claim to being the oldest pub in the Lanes area of Brighton. It?s something of a landmark and was immortalised by Graham Greene in his classic novel 'Brighton Rock'.

This quaint-looking place is equally appealing inside. The ground floor lounge offers cluttered, homely Victorian splendour: Chesterfield-style maroon banquettes rest against burgundy flock wallpaper and scarlet velvet drapes brush polished mahogany. Antique chamber pots hang from the ceiling and framed sepia photographs line both the walls and ceiling. The rustic, cobbled covered courtyard maintains its alfresco feel.

Robert Donston Stephenson, one of many individuals identified as the never caught Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper, once lived above the pub and some claim he even plotted his murders here. Accordingly there is a small exhibition in the Greene Room upstairs.

The drinks offering is above that of many pubs with fourteen wines by the glass and a varying selection of well kept real ales. The old school selection of pub grub includes ploughman's lunch, jacket potatoes and homemade pies of the day.
