Bottled in January and released in April 2011, Batch 003 has a natural cask strength weighing in at 55.3% abv and is bottled without chill filtration. (Batch 001 (Feb '09) was 57.8% and Batch 002 (2010) was 58.3% abv.)
Laphroaig 10-year-old is a long established and much respected core whisky within the Laphroaig range, but apparently matching the strength of each batch released always proved something of a challenge. Hence since February 2009 and batch 001, batches of Laphroaig 10-Year-Old Cask Strength have been released early each year with the strength being allowed to vary each time. To quote John Campbell, Laphroaig's distillery manager, "it's just going to be what it is".
Sampled before 1st May 2011
Clear, deep golden amber.
Barbeque charcoal, damp peat smoke and seaweed nose.
Even watered back to 40% this has an intense peaty sea monster of a palate with dry oak, peat smoke and seaweed.
Smoked vegetable savoury finish ends a challenging malt that Laphroaig enthusiasts will adore.
