Ojo de Tigre (Eye of the Tiger) mezcal is made by the folk at Case Lumbre and boasts Mexican film star Luis Gerardo Méndez, as a co-founder. And, if that were not backing enough, in July 2020, Pernod Ricard invested in the brand.

This joven mezcal is produced using maguey Espadin (agave Angustifolia) from Oaxaca and maguey Tobalá (agave Potatorum) from Puebla. The tobalá agave used is cultivated from fertilised seeds of naturally grown plants, to help make a sustainably produced mezcal.

These agave are roasted in an underground pit and then milled with a tahona stone. The fermented juice is then double distilled in a copper alembic still.

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Flinty minerality, charcoal/coal dust, green apple, peach, and very subtle whisps of smoke.

Taste:

Surprisingly mellow with a soft mouthfeel. Salty and flinty minerality with coal dust/charcoal, cracked black pepper, and subtle smokiness. Faint ripe peachy fruit sweetness.

Aftertaste:

Cracked black pepper spice, lightly bitter coal dust, and delicate smoke.

Overall:

As mezcals go Ojo de Tigre is light on smokiness but has a distinct lightly bitter coal dust/charcoal note.
