Distilled for London’s Berry Bros. & Rudd by Ironroot Republic distillery of Texas, this bourbon celebrates the events of 1842 when the Lone Star State set up its legation above Berry Brother’s shop at No 3 St. James Street in an attempt to shore up the then Republic’s independence against the USA.

Created by brothers Robert and Jonathan Likarish, who founded their Ironroot Republic distillery in 2013, the whisky was blended in the UK by Berry Bros. & Rudd’s Doug McIvor from three different batches of whiskies aged in four American and two European oak casks. The mashbills of the three different whiskies:
- 95% yellow corn and 5% purple corn
- 95% yellow corn and 5% red corn
- 95% yellow corn and 5% rye

In 1963, on behalf of the Anglo-Texan society, the Texas Governor Price Daniel presented Berry Bros. & Rudd with a plaque to commemorate the location of the Legation. The plaque still hangs proudly on the wall between No.3 and No.4 St James’s Street in the alleyway to Pickering Place. It reads: “In this building was the legation for the ministers from the Republic of Texas to the Court of St. James 1842-1845. Erected by the Anglo-Texan Society.”

At the time of gifting the plaque, the Anglo-Texan society also paid Berry Bros. & Rudd the $160 debt left outstanding by the Texan delegates 118 years earlier when they vacated their St James’s offices in 1845.

A limited edition of 2,000 bottles of Texas Legation Batch No. 1 were released for exclusive sale in the UK by Berry Bros. & Rudd in October 2017.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 17/10/2016

Appearance:

Clear, coppery amber.

Aroma:

Pungent pencil shaving oak, vanilla fudge, freshly baked brown bread, buttery new leather and toasted pecan. Faint overripe banana is accentuated with water.

Taste:

Intensely flavoured with dry woody tannins, maple and pecan, balanced by rich vanilla and some overripe banana. Enlivening black pepper spice.

Aftertaste:

New leather, vanilla fudge and black pepper spice with light nuttiness.

Overall:

Berry Bros. & Rudd, describe this whiskey as being a “young, bold bourbon” – a very accurate summary. It may lack subtlety but its youthful woody exuberance is presented with appealing new leather, vanilla fudge and toasted pecan.
