Evan Stroeve and Adam Dow Chat Competitions

Words by Difford's Guide AU

Having both represented Australia in 2021 global grand finals, Evan Stroeve and Adam Dow chat the highs and lows of cocktail competitions.

Adam Dow and Evan Stroeve both spent a considerable chunk of their career working for Icebank Hospitality, owners of Dead Ringer in Sydney's Surry Hills and the now-closed Bulletin Place. While they've now both gone on to develop in other companies, Evan at RE bar and Adam with Merivale, they attribute a large part of their drive for success and excellence to this time with Tim Philips, Rob Sloan and David Hobbs.

In 2021 Adam Dow represented Australia in Bacardi Legacy and made the final three. Evan Stroeve represented Australian in Diageo's World Class and came 3rd in the global final. Both events were virtual due to the global pandemic.

In a chat with Australia editor Jane Ryan, they discuss what it really takes to get up on that stage - the work ethic needed, the extra miles taken - and how it felt to get close but not take 1st place. They also discuss the challenges of a virtual final and give some advice for those considering cocktail competitions.

Difford's Guide would have loved to bring this chat to the Australian bar community as a live event - or even professionally filmed. However, the lockdown in Sydney has prevented all of us from interacting beyond zoom. We hope the rudimentary video still gives you a great insight into these two formidable bartenders and doesn't take away from the importance of what they have to say.
