On 31st January 2017, Diageo announced plans to build a new whiskey distillery in the former Guinness Power Station at Dublin’s St. James’s Gate with investment of €25 million (£18.6 million) over three years. The site is not only adjacent to Diageo’s Guinness Distillery and Storehouse visitor centre, but also lies a stones throw away from the site of what was the George Roe and Co. Distillery. This extended over 17 acres on Thomas Street and was once Ireland's largest distillery.

Little remains of George Roe’s old distillery but its old windmill tower, known as St. Patrick’s survives as a local landmark, and a pear tree that dates from 1850 not only survives but continues to produce fruit.
