The name George Monin is recognised in the best bars throughout the world for its extensive range of high quality flavoured syrups.
The company was founded by George Monin in 1912 in the heart of the small city of Bourges, central France. Back then practically every town in France had at least one liqueur producer using the local fruits to make their own liqueurs. In the late 1920s/early 1930s George also started making flavoured sugar syrups. He quickly established Monin as a leader in quality fruit syrup and his motto ‘La Passion de la Qualité’ (‘Passion for Quality’) is still used as the company’s slogan today.
Today Monin is still owned and run by Olivier Monin, the founder’s grandson, who personally approves every new flavour. George Monin SAS now produces more than 120 flavours and exports to a similar number of markets. In January 1996 Monin opened a U.S. manufacturing plant in Clearwater, Florida and in March 2009 the Monin Asia plant opened in Kuala Lumpur to serve the Pacific Rim. Liqueurs now account for less than 10 per cent of Monin’s business as the company has become world famous for its flavoured syrups.
When discussing the quality of competitive products, Olivier points out that it is not the percentage of juice used that is important, but crucially the quality of the fruit from which the juice originated. He uses the example of huge oversized strawberries with little flavour verses small ripe flavoursome wild strawberries. Olivier obviously has his grandfather’s ‘Passion for Quality’.
