Review

The high concept of Grandma's - a Tiki bar styled like your granny's lounge - might seem, at first blush, counterintuitive. But this quirky little basement space, under The Guitar Lounge on Clarence Street, comes from the fertile brain of James Bradey, who has a background in interior design. And, from the antimacassars to the padded bar stools, from the aged family photos to the hurricane glasses, it shows.

Although there are plenty of gin and vodka mixes for the rumophobic, rums are the star of the show here, with a Tiki edge: think reworked PiƱa Coladas, Corn & Oil, Daiquiris (including blended frozen fruit varieties), as well as chunky concoctions like the Made Man, with Zacapa, Talisker and bitters.

Refreshingly small, relaxed and un-dressy, Grandma's is a good example of the Sydney small bars that have sprung up over the last three years or so.
