Review

Once a West Indian shebeen frequented by Christine Keeler and Stephen Ward of Profumo Affair fame, this is now a Mexican bar and restaurant owned by Tom Conran.

The bold décor, with lipstick red banquette seats and bar stools, makes the tiny ground floor space feel rather like the inside of a sweet jar. There is a second, larger bar in the basement, which is more atmospheric than the bright space above thanks to its low ceiling.

The food is inspired by Mexican taquerias and superb tacos, tostadas, burros and enchiladas are served on plastic trays, adding to their authenticity. Drinks arrive in chunky tumblers and follow the Mexican theme. Margaritas include the wonderfully named 'Sinful Cynthia's Cadillac Margarita', which is served with a Grand Marnier float, while the good range of premium tequilas should be chased with a spicy sangrita. Two wines are offered, a Petite Syrah and a Chardonnay, both from Baja California, Mexico.

Those in the know head downstairs where some superb bartenders operate and the lucky few get to sit at the bartender's table behind the bar counter itself.
