The vintage décor of VCC causes me to reminisce of teenage visits to my granny's - homely, safe and a tad chintzy with furnishings and décor harking back to the Victorian era. However, here, in place of granny's overly milky weak tea, they offer a very different drinks selection.
A labour of love by General Manager, Gareth Lambe, the cocktail menu at VCC is extraordinarily good and worthy of a Tales' Spirited Award. Some 70 different drinks are described in the hardback book, beautifully presented in the style of the Savoy Cocktail Book complete with illustrations. The book opens in the early 1400s with Absinthe Drips then journeys through punches to the golden age of the cocktail, the early 1900s, Prohibition, Tiki and the arrival of vodka, ending with VCC's own signature "craft cocktails." The cocktails are as beautifully made as the book is presented.
Like most speakeasies, you can chance your luck and ring the doorbell but it's better to make a reservation for food and/or just drinks. Bookings are for a two-and-a-half hour sitting but requests for longer periods are warmly received. Bookings generally fit into the following slots: 5pm-7:30pm, 7:30pm-10pm, 10pm-12:30am and 12:30am-close.
