Review

Named after the roads which dissect the corner on which this neighbourhood bar sits, Tariff & Dale is a long two-tone bar with booth seating down its length. Beneath, its basement restaurant offers modern British fare, from sausage rolls through to Sunday roast by way of sourdough pizza from a wood-fired oven.

The drinks menu cleverly features classic cocktails and riffs on classics grouped in threes with each trio headed by that cocktail’s original incarnation, followed by a mainstream version and then the bar’s own take on that classic. E.g. a Whiskey Sour is followed by an Amaretto Sour and Ginger Infused Pisco Sour. The bar also boasts a good range of spirits and beers with the likes of Neck Oil, Curious Brew, Outstanding IPA and Black Jock Stout on draught.

Built in the mid-1800s, the building was a cotton spinners’ warehouse until a direct hit by a firebomb during the Manchester Blitz left it derelict until recent years. The building’s former use is evidenced by a hydraulic fabric press in the kitchen and the old elevator shaft which rises above the snug housed in what was the goods lift at the end of the bar.

Mike Ramsden, Tariff and Dale’s Bar Manager says, “With the history of the building dating back so far we wanted our cocktail menu to reflect this, and so our concept was born. Ten of our favourite classics made three of our favourite ways, from where it all started to where we are now. Our aim is for each section of the menu to provide our guests with a chance to see not only the innovation and creativity we personally put into our drinks, but also the heritage these drinks have and the building blocks that were created by people before us to allow us to do what we do.
