Review

Warning: Fritzel’s does not sell cocktails. It does not have a good range of beers or wines. Nor does it have comfy seating or even attractive decor. However, it does have great live jazz, a hell of an atmosphere and cold Amber beer.

I have to thank Dale DeGroff for introducing me to this truly authentic jazz pub set in an historic 1831 building on Bourbon Street in the heart of the French Quarter. It was founded in October 1969 by Gunter ‘Dutch’ Seutter and its appearance would suggest little has changed since. Dutch no longer runs the bar but otherwise, nothing has altered and upbeat jazz continues to be played nightly by talented local musicians to the delight of cheering crowds.

Fritzel’s is unsophisticated to say the least with bench seating and basic toilet facilities, but oh boy, it is a great bar. However, compared to the goings on in the street outside, this is a most sophisticated sanctuary for jazz lovers. The drink of choice here are pints of the local Abita Amber, which you can order from your seat so not missing a beat.
