Review

The name of this bar is inspired by the 1962 Bruñel film, Würgeengel, which roughly translates as 'The Extermination Angel'. The film is about a supper party where guests are unable to leave. There is nothing physically stopping them - just a mysterious force which keeps them there.

The same applies to this neighbourhood bar. It's the sort of establishment where you go for one drink, and end up staying - helped by food from the next door Italian restaurant being available at the bar. The barmen are both charming and capable, and the extensive drinks list provides a good excuse to turn "just one drink" into two, or three, or four...

Würgeengel was formerly a chemists, and lots of the antique features of the old shop are still there. The ceiling is covered in glass tiles, and the shelves behind the bar look like old apothecary cabinets. Warm, ochre earth walls are uplit with glass chandeliers, and wooden panelling helps create the mellow atmosphere of a lost era. Würgeengel truly is a bar from a bygone age.
