Review

The much respected Jake Burger after which this bar is named is now to be found shaking his thing in London's Notting Hill at the Portobello Star. However, the big man's influence remains and this drinker's institution is as fun, debauched and dangerous as ever.

Originally opened by Jake in 2004, this eponymously named venue was created by knocking three cellars into one, original white porcelain Victorian tiles still adorn vaulted ceilings. It's far from plush and this real drinker's bar is regularly crammed to the rafters, so arrive early to avoid disappointment at the door.

The cocktail menu is billed as being and quite literally is "a condensed guide to popular mixed drinks of the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries" with a "Future Proof" section listing more contemporary libations. Whichever era or decade you decide to plump for the result is likely to a well made rendition. Even when the place is pumping I have enjoyed great cocktails and a properly poured Duval or two. OK and some shots.
