Melbourne's first luxey hotel bar, and the first stand alone cocktail bar from Rockpool's Neil Perry, The Waiting Room really does hit the spot. Set amid the sleek black marble of the Crown Towers posh shopping and gambling complex, it's a world class lobby bar that gives some London and New York venues a run for their money.
Silver glitter mosaics, monochrome imagery, mirrors and mood lighting, along with details such as vintage crystal glassware, set a tone that's a perfect hybrid of bling and muted elegance, with a range of spaces in which to huddle or people-watch depending on your tastes.
The drinks list, which includes plenty of good fizz and some great beers, is themed around cocktails created in the great hotels: some tweaked, others untouched.
Tempted by a Cachaca Marmalade Cocktail, a take on Salvatore Calabrese's Breakfast Martini, I opted for a Clover Club Cocktail No. 4, the classic cocktail that's currently Australia's answer to the Cosmo of the 90s, tweaked with raspberry vinegar syrup, citrus and tarragon.
That's the sort of eye-opening, possibly even eye-watering recipe that either really
works or really doesn't. This one? It worked.
