Review

Walk off the street into this pretty, one-roomed cafe, and you’ll be struck by the elegant but informal surroundings: checkerboard floor tiles and sandy yellow walls, terracotta pots, palms and tea lights.

The focal point bar is an oval, wooden counter, good for coffee by day (there’s a hidden kitchen behind, good for snacks), and cocktails by night. The menu consists of around 15 classics as well as house originals including the Coco Cooler (Amaretto, fraise, strawberry purée and cream) and a decent list of spirits, digestives, aperitifs and liqueurs. From 9pm until closing time, Cafe Coco cuts cocktail prices to £4, which makes it a particularly popular place to stop for a post-dinner drink.

Note, there’s another Cafe Coco at the Royal Hotel – not quite as pretty and atmospheric at the Cowley branch, but it’s a good first stop when you get off the train...or if you miss the train then it’s a great place to have a drink while waiting for the next one!
