Review

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims it can trace its heritage back to 1189 and that it is England's oldest pub. That title is in dispute by several rivals, but despite the rather more modern imperative to 'Find us on Facebook' this place is undisputedly ancient, carved out of the rocks and sandstone caves underneath Nottingham Castle. It even smells like it's got nearly 1000 years' worth of beer soaked into the floorboards.

Think low ceilings, alcoves, open fireplaces, nooks and crannies among a rabbit warren of rooms, decorated with suits of armour and populated by bearded real ale types - you won't find cocktails at Ye Olde Trip, but it is a drinking experience you won't forget. There's 'Olde Trip' on draft as well as some unusual guest ales that might include Sooty Oatmeal Stout, Nottingham Supreme and the reassuringly appropriate Robin Hood Ale. Find your nook or go outside to the shady garden. If one thing spoiled things for us it was the overload of blackboards everywhere.
